Oahu Fishing Reports: March

fishing kayak with pedals

This page contains Oahu fishing reports from March. As March comes closer, bottom fishing is expected to pick up. Although Papio remain active from the shoreline, the bite is decreasing. The winter/spring trolling season has been relatively slow, with billfish and aku caught in small numbers but not consistently. This week, though, reports indicate shibi and small ahi are still being caught off the coast of Oahu. Deep 7 snappers can also be caught by kawakawa, nabeta, and kawakawa. Bottom fishing is the best and will continue throughout April.

After August storm, Papio bite was completely gone

Papio bite and oio spots have suddenly dwindled since August closed, and the recent storm has caused muddy flats and changed the structure of some spots. The bite and oio spots should be improved by the next storm. So keep your eyes out! You can filet Papio and make sushi from it.

Papio being still caught off the coast

Despite a disappointing oama season this year, papio are still being caught off the shores of Oahu at the right tides. They were skeptical this season. They are more skittish than normal, mainly due to the stormy, humid weather. During that time, the papio were in smaller numbers, and they began to hunt for new oama once the storms passed. Inshore fishing has been slowing down as the oama became more abundant. The stragglers don't bother to swim in, which allows lure fishermen to catch nice-sized papio.

Papio season began late, and ended late

Oahu's papio and oama seasons have ended and begun late this year. Oama were not caught in Oahu since the fall 2016. Oahu's Oama and Papio seasons are late this year because of the La Nina. Actually, fishing is still being affected by the weak La Nina. The bad news is the 2020 season could be one of most difficult oama/papio seasons since recent memory.

Papio season will be less active unless the Oama come in

This year's oama seasons began in July and ended in September. Many believed that La Nina, which has negatively impacted fishing over the last few decades, had ended before the start of summer. However, current circumstances suggest that La Nina may still be in effect. That means that the oama season will be weaker than normal unless the Oama come in late in the season.

Strategies to catch fish off oahu

To catch fish in Hawaii, you should explore all the fishing spots. Sport fishing is most common along the leeward coast of the island. This area can be reached from Kewalo Basin, Honolulu. Kaena Point, north of Waikiki is also a good place to fish. Pinnacles, a name for shallow fishing spots south of Waikiki, is also available.
